Three Things to Consider When Creating Your 'Standard Operating Procedure' for Deicing

Posted by jonathan.nelson on 10.26.2015

Snow is already falling in the mountains, and winter could be arriving sooner than expected given the recent weather patters. Now is the time to prepare, and creating a ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ (SOP) is a perfect place to start if you haven’t already. Keep in mind that your SOP should be specific to your business. You can start by choosing the product from EnviroTech Services that will work best for your needs – such as region, temperatures, and surfaces. However, there are many other factors and situations to keep in mind while you are planning.

Preparation

Possibly the most important aspect is that you do not run out of materials. This is a case where it is always better to over-prepare for the winter weather ahead. Having an ordering system in place will help ensure that your organization does not end up on the news discussing your supply shortage. It happens every year.

Timing

Timing could be the next important consideration. Depending on your product, you may need to wait and apply your deicing product once the roads are already wet to ensure maximum effectiveness. You will also need to determine a chain of communication for storm emergencies to maximize mobility in the shortest amount of time possible.

Accounting for 24-hour timing possibilities will naturally lead to a plan to cover overtime and additional manpower. You don’t want to be scrambling to find extra drivers when timing is crucial to effective product distribution, and therefore safety. Familiarize your employees with your new SOP before every new season starts so that they are aware of time commitments and the potential for overtime pay.

Route Map(s)

Lastly, don’t forget to include a route map – possibly several route maps – keeping in mind the timing for your product, manpower, and the size of your service area.

Hopefully, this list will help to get you started on creating a successful SOP for the upcoming winter.
